Photoinduced permanent gratings in polymethyl methacrylate with individual femtosecond laser pulse

Both relief gratings on the surface and refractive index gratings inside transparent polymethyl methacrylate have been written by two-beam interference of individual 130 fs laser pulse at 800 nm. A surface-relief grating is fabricated by the ablation and the diffraction efficiency of the first order can reach 20%. A volume grating inside the sample is formed by the photoinduced change in the refractive index. When one beam carries information, holographic data storage on the surface is demonstrated.
